Case Study: Harper’s Road to Recovery After a Paw Fracture
Meet the Patient
Harper, a 6-year-old female Labradoodle, came to see us after an unfortunate backyard accident. While her owner’s son was zooming around on his bike, Harper accidentally ran into it, resulting in a painful injury to one of her paws.
The Diagnosis
After a thorough examination, we took radiographs (X-rays), which revealed fractures to four metatarsal bones in a single paw.
The metatarsals are similar to the long bones on the top of the human foot, and injuries like this can be serious. In many cases, multiple metatarsal fractures require complex surgical repair by a specialist.
However, depending on the stability of the fractures and the patient’s situation, conservative management with splinting can sometimes be a successful alternative.
The Treatment Plan
After carefully discussing all options with Harper’s family, we decided to move forward with conservative management using a splinting approach.
This required commitment, patience, and close monitoring. Harper returned to our clinic weekly for splint changes over a period of 7–8 weeks, allowing us to assess healing progress and ensure the splint continued to provide proper support.
The Outcome
Harper’s family played a crucial role in her recovery. They were incredibly diligent about keeping her activity restricted and preventing her from chewing or damaging her splint—no small task for an energetic Doodle! Their dedication made a significant difference in her outcome.
Follow-up radiographs showed excellent fracture healing, and we were thrilled to finally remove Harper’s splint. She is now fully splint-free and happily back to her normal, “crazy Doodle” lifestyle. To celebrate her newfound freedom, Harper even got to enjoy a joyful romp in the snow this past weekend.
Harper’s case is a wonderful example of how thoughtful decision-making, consistent follow-up care, and strong teamwork between a veterinary team and a committed family can lead to an excellent outcome—even without surgery.
