Understanding Allergies in Cats

What are the common signs and symptoms of allergies in cats?

Most of the time, allergies in cats manifest as skin or ear changes, making them very itchy. They can develop scabs or skin rashes. Sometimes, they may also experience gastrointestinal issues or itchy, runny eyes. However, today we'll mostly focus on skin changes.

What are the most common allergens that affect cats?

Cats are typically allergic to three major things. One would be environmental allergens, which include dust, trees, weeds, flowers, pollen, and similar substances. The other major allergies are food allergies and flea allergies.

What are the tests that are available to diagnose cat allergies?

For food allergies, we can conduct an elimination diet trial. This involves feeding the cat strictly for about two to three months with either a prescribed diet or a homemade diet we help you formulate. For environmental allergies, a dermatologist can perform intradermal allergy testing, similar to those done in humans. This involves shaving a small area and conducting a wheal and flare test to identify allergens. We also offer a blood test at Central Providence to determine the same. Flea allergies are generally assessed by treating for fleas and observing the response.

How are cat allergies treated?

Treatment depends on the symptoms. If they are itchy and have skin infections, we typically treat these symptoms with anti-itch medications, topical medications, and antibiotics. Ultimately, we aim to identify the root cause of the symptoms and address the allergy.

Are there any over-the-counter remedies for cat allergies?

Over-the-counter antihistamines like Benadryl can be tried, but generally, allergies in cats and dogs don't respond well to them. Unfortunately, there aren't many effective over-the-counter options.

Can allergies in cats be cured or are they a lifelong issue?

Allergies in cats are a lifelong issue. We manage allergies rather than cure them because even when you identify and avoid the source, flare-ups can still occur. It is always a managed lifelong condition.

Can cat allergies lead to other health issues if left untreated?

The biggest concern with untreated allergies in cats is stress. Cats do not handle stress well, which can lead to other health issues. So, indirectly, untreated allergies can cause additional problems.

How can I reduce allergens in my home to help protect my allergic cat?

Keeping your cat treated for fleas is essential. Additionally, maintaining low dust levels and using air purifiers can help, similar to measures we take to keep our environment allergen-free.

Can I prevent my cat from developing allergies?

No, unfortunately, it's somewhat determined by their DNA. You can try to stick with one type of food so that if an allergy elimination diet is needed, there are options they haven't tried. However, preventing allergies is not possible, except for keeping them on flea prevention if they have a flea allergy.

What should I do if my cat has a severe allergic reaction?

If you suspect a severe allergic reaction, take your cat to see a veterinarian immediately. If it occurs in the evening or on a weekend, visit an ER or urgent care veterinary clinic. Whenever in doubt about the severity, it's best to consult a vet as soon as possible.
